More than half the homes and business reached by the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband rollout have switched to faster fibre-based services, latest figures show. Across Scotland, nearly 930,000 homes and businesses have now been reached by the Digital Scotland network, with Openreach engineers continuing work on the ground during 2019.

Digital network operator Openreach has called on Scottish developers to make sure home buyers don’t miss out on ultrafast, full fibre broadband when they’re purchasing new properties. More than 60 Scottish homebuilders at a conference at BT Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh heard that around 3,000 new properties a year are currently missing out on full fibre technology.

He saw a ‘full-fibre’ network built directly to the properties to deliver ultrafast internet connections. The future-proof services can carry speeds up to 1Gbps - 21 times faster than the UK’s current average.

Cowdenbeath MSP Annabelle Ewing has been shadowing Openreach engineers to see the latest developments in high-speed broadband in her constituency. More than 98 per cent of premises in the Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath area are now able to connect to broadband at a speed of 30Mbps and above.

The Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband team is celebrating the latest fibre broadband availability in Girvan, South Ayrshire. They were joined by senior pupils from Girvan Primary School to unveil the latest fibre street cabinet that serves part of the local area. The Girvan premises are among more than 16,700 across South Ayrshire now able to connect to the Digital Scotland network.
